# 135 11-11-2013 On Non-human Animals

In today's hoofbeats episode, we are in discussion with a Walter Sanchez-Suarez, U of G Phd student, who is currently studying consciousness in animals. His Masters concentrated on ethical theories and morals in regards to non-human animals. Our conversation touched on the multidimensional aspects of our relationship with the other animals that live with us. Non-human Animals Among Human Animals, the book we talked about will soon be presented at the University of Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, Spain. This is the place where Walter studied veterinary science, and did his masters too. The book covers cultural and social aspects, such as hunting, cruelty in culture, the question of vegetarianism and animal welfare, and links with the dawn of feminism, as discussed in topics as diverse as globalization to literature.

For fun, we also learned some horse words in Spanish! And, it was fun to hear that Walter is also a musician, and member of MontaƱas, which is how he came to volunteer with CFRU, currently hosting the show, Los Tenebrosos on Monday 10:00 am to 10:30 am - The new underground sounds of Spain!

You can also hear episode 4 of the Horstory series, from Jessica Miller - this one is about racing.  There is also a reading from Sarah Sheard, Chapter 6 of her blog, as well as an original short story for hoofbeats by Ian McD.

Our Pure Guelphishness feature was Magali Meagher, which you can learn more about at Blog Guelph.
