Sharing Equine Therapy, an article for the Rider

I bet everyone of us reading this magazine knows the profound benefits of being around horses. And we all know how horses mirror us, while having no judgement. We have all seen how horses can help us develop leadership skills or heal from stress, not to mention benefit physically from all the hard work! And then there is learning team work, responsibility and true partnership.

At a recent event in Guelph called “An Evening of Sharing - Equine Therapy” I heard that a growing number of Canadians are discovering the healing power of horses. In equine-assisted therapy and learning, horse and human are brought together to tackle a long list of issues, including mental heath. It reminds me of how doctors in Japan are prescribing “Forest Bathing,” for the benefits of nature.

However, I find it unsettling how many Life Coaches, Counsellors and Corporate Trainers are popping up everywhere, chasing their dreams and following the passion of their youth, which was being around horses. Because I am seeing facilities that are being run by great sales people, with barely adequate equine training or experience. How does one set about examining facilities EQUINE credentials?

EFW, EAGALA, CANTRA, OE, EC, UoG ~ BBRM, OVC, what’s your favourite acronym?

hoofbeats radio and podcast, produced in Guelph, is starting site inspections, to help ensure horse welfare and human safety with an eye to National standards, and perhaps International Standards too.

Imagine a world where youth reporters are empowered by hoofbeats to get out and ask questions, including about animal rights, while they visit horse facilities. They will observe and record as they work through our mystery tour checklist. And, records and recordings of their visits will be compiled by a qualified, longstanding rider/trainer, riding and horsemanship instructor.

Guelph Resident, Kim Logue, has won a once in a lifetime chance to train with one of the World's Best Combined Drivers, Chester Weber.  Weber is based in Ocala, Florida and is not just a "four-in-hand" international competitor and champion, he also acts as Chef D'Equip (technical director/coordinator and representative) of the other US Driving Teams in International Competition

Combined Driving is an equestrian sport involving a carriage, where the driver sits on a vehicle drawn by a single horse, a pair or a team of four, in this sport of three phases: Dressage, Cross-country Marathon and Obstacle Cones course.   It is one of the ten international equestrian disciplines recognized by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) although it is not an Olympic Sport.

A volunteer/blogger for the National Sport office, Logue was thrilled to attend the World Equestrian Games in Lexington Kentucky in the fall of 2010, the first time the games have ever been held on North American soil.  This was her first chance to see the sport at the world class level, live, and her first chance to see Chester Weber compete in person.  (photo credit 0950, Chester close up, photo Kim Logue). The next World Equestrian Games will take place in Normandy in 2014, and Logue aspires to attend there as well.

Logue might be best known in Guelph as the founder and host of the popular "hoofbeats radio" that had aired on Sunday mornings on CFRU until September 2011.  "This is an amazing opportunity! I want to make a filmdocumentary during the training time I have won," Logue says, "to help share knowledge about the horse sports, in a whole new discipline and genre."

Canadian Eventer Kim Logue Wins Once-In-A-Lifetime Experience To Train With Chester Weber Through Gift Of The Horse Website

– Canadian rider Kim Logue may just be the biggest fan of Combined Driver Chester Weber, a fact she proved when she won a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend two days on Weber’s Live Oak Plantation in Ocala, Florida, training with the legendary combined driver.  Logue won the contest on the Gift of the Horse website by writing an award winning essay explaining why she is Weber’s biggest fan. 

In her winning essay she said, “Chester Weber is a champion many times over, but there are other reasons I am his number one fan. He has been the introduction to the sport of Combined Driving, not just for me, but also for countless enthusiasts. I can vividly remember an entrancing demo during the Symphony of the Horse Charity Fundraiser in Gainesville, Florida where he was wearing a headset mic and whipping around the arena describing the sport in general, as well as the specific methods he was using moment by moment, with his team in action, to give a taste of the sport.”

Logue went on to write that she admires that fact that Weber believes in cross training his horses and she added that she is his number one fan, “because of the respect and appreciation he has shown for his carefully selected staff team. I am his number one fan because he is known to provide horses to students from time to time, including Canadians! I am his number one fan because he is known to invest in horses being shown in other sports, including by Canadian riders. I am his number one fan because some of the most amazing photographs published of him are taken by his wife.”

Logue said she was impressed to see Weber’s calm composure and patience after many delays due to the heat while waiting his turn for the cones phase at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.  “Not to mention the team spirit shown in the way he cheered for his US teammates, ringside smiling and fist in the air!” Logue said, adding that she finds Weber to be approachable, friendly and down to earth.

Logue describes herself as a grass roots eventer, who grew up on rescue horses and borrowed ponies, a bond she shares with the iconic driver. Weber is well known for rescuing his horse Jamaica from a slaughterhouse before giving the celebrated horse a second career in which he won countless world championships. “The chance to train with Chester for a weekend means the world to me,” Logue said.

Weber, the United States’ most decorated combined driver, said he was pleased to be taking part in the Gift of the Horse contest. “I love the sport of combined driving and sharing my passion and expertise with others is something I love doing. The great thing about the Gift of the Horse is all the money raised on the website goes directly to the American Youth Horse Council. I certainly look forward to meeting Kim,” Weber said.

There was a lot of good media coverage about our horse talk show, with exposure in The Rider, Horse Sport, Horse Power, Equine Lifestyle, Horse Canada and even the podcast Equinely Inclined! Nikky got a 2 page spread in an Amercian Magazine and Kim was interviewed by Horse Radio Networds out of Lexington about the time of the Media of the Year Award from the National Sport Office. Hilary published a few articles about the show, in between hosting and reporting for it, and has since officially embarked on a Broadcast Journalism Post Secondary Education program.

in hindsight it was a bit dumb to highlight a feature on an American rider to a NATIONAL award in Canada?

The Contest Entry Episode:
The first minute is an audio mash of voices collected at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, and features comments from Darren ChaiChai -- Known as "the fitness guy" on the U.S. team, Chiacchia cross-trains to improve his fitness as a rider.

Darren is well known from the accident on March 15, 2008 at the Red Hills Horse Trials. He was negotiating the preliminary cross country course aboard seven year old Baron Verdi, whose recent performance at home and in competition had provided Darren with great confidence. A misstep led to a somersault of horse and rider, and led to changes in the sport of eventing.



Notes About The Program:
The first ever broadcast was Dec, 2007 and week after week hoofbeats! radio has delivered outstanding media coverage, 8-10am Sunday mornings. With on-line streams from CFRU and CFMU, and via 93.3fm the show was broadcast over a simulcast broadcast radius with a population of more than 1,000,000 -- before the herd decided to put together a live equine theatre show instead ha.

Kimberly Logue Named as Recipient of the 2008 Susan Jane Anstey Media Award

Ottawa, Ontario

Equine Canada has named Kimberly Logue of hoofbeats! radio as the recipient of the Susan Jane Anstey Media Award. Logue had made a great effort to provide a voice to the equestrian community and to enhance the image of equestrian interests with the public through her weekly two-hour radio broadcast. With hoofbeats! radio, a syndicated horse talk show, Logue covers many equine topics while entertaining and educating her audience. The first broadcast of hoofbeats! Radio was heard on December 7, 2007, at 93.3 fm from the University of Guelph, and listenership has increased week after week. The popular radio show now also transmits from the tower at Mohawk College to reach a wider audience. “I am very excited to receive this award, especially because it recognizes a not-for-profit radio program that reaches the grass roots horse people and welcomes the general public into our horsey world,” said Logue.

EC Media of the Year, Nominee's Bio

Kim Logue has made exceptional effort to provide a voice to the equestrian community and to enhance the image of equestrian interests to the public, with the launch of hoofbeats! radio, a Horse Talk Show produced at the University of Guelph.

"I launched it as a way to develop new media skills without paying $15,000 in Connestoga College tuition. And I chose equine subject matter because I wanted to fit the NCRA station's mandate and needed a topic where I felt like an authority" Logue explains.

Kim Logue, hoofbeats! radio's producer/founder/frequent host is an EC Certified Instructor who especially loves choreographing musical ride movements. She is currently the Saddle Club and Camp Director at Manoravon Farms (New Forest Pony Breeders) in Guelph Ontario.

She started riding at 9, owned her own horse as a teenager, and evented with a Corporate Sponsorship in the 90's. She has mounted the Equine Star of Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera in Manhattan, ridden scenic routes in Florida for a former coach of the Canadian Equestrian Team, and jogged a filly hitched to harness-racing cart. She also surprised an elk in the woods of Alberta her first time in a Western saddle! She looks forward to driving, overnight trail rides and hopes to someday ride a Kur. She will also see more Combined Driving in the upcoming season. She has presented at Toronto's Royal Agricultural Winter Fair for Equine Guelph, written for many horsey publications, and uses her devotion to horses as a driving force for hoofbeats.radio!

At Troika Trakehner Stud Farm on Sunday, September 9, 2006, the esteemed Walter Zettl, was in attendance during the entire Stallion Show. A former dressage coach of the US Olympic team, he remains one of the world's most revered German masters, and was obviously a guest held in high honour by the attendees and the facility team. Zettl has recently released a video series called A Matter of Trust, and is also the author of a critically acclaimed book, Dressage in Harmony.

Xenophon, was the name of a Greek cavalry officer who wrote a book more than 2,000 years ago, about training war horses. Obviously, his ideas are still admired, since Hans Hollenbach of Troika and Zettl work together today, in an initiative called Xenophon, promoting the kind treatment of horses in Dressage, through correct classical training. The day’s presentation of stallions, offspring and horses for sale, in demonstrations under saddle, in hand, over fences and free-style displayed not only quality breeding and bloodlines – it was proof that respectful training practices work. The day began with the Canadian National Anthem and a beautiful musical ride. A Xenophon banner hung at the end of the arena in which a piourette was explained, at one point even ridden one-handed!

A competition level kur was included on the itinerary, and the walk and trot sequences worked delightfully with the beats of the music, though the match was not as distinct in canter. The series of movements was not performed for judges, however, and clearly the hearts of the audience members were won. The event ended with a horse and human team riding to a dramatic finale – a halt and salute in crescendo as an impressive dynamic of real performance.

Overall the event was a wonderful day which displayed that Troika not only preserves history through embodiment of Xenophon’s old philosopy that you must never lose your temper, or use aggressive force when working with a horse, as well as through superior Trakehner and Achal Teke performance bloodlines.

Think Fit, Helmet Fit - Published Article

While no hard hat can protect the wearer against all possible injuries, they have been proven to help. Remember, helmets only work if they are worn consistently, fit correctly and are properly secured.

1) Try different brands, because they are different! I have a friend who says she has a Troxel head, not a Tipperary head. Keep your receipt and read all the instructions that come with your helmet. Some have a replacement policy if the helmet sustains an impact!

2) Shake head side to side and back and forth, to ensure that there is no movement of the hat A snug helmet should sit level on top of your head. If it tips back or worse, bounces around when you are riding, it is too loose! It should cover your forehead, two fingers or one inch above eyebrow, without pinching temples

3) When your helmet is fastened and you move it, the skin on your forehead should move with it. To ensure your chinstrap is snug enough, try a yawn test – you should feel the hat press down when you open your mouth in a wide yawn.
