This episode includes voices from visitors to the station during College Royal, as well as the voices of two of our newest volunteers – Jordan and Jaylen.  You will also hear the latest chapter from Sarah Sheard’s blog, a first ever trial segment from Wind Dancer Pony Rescue, two OLD segments from Hilary Eastmure when she first started with hoofbeats.  To celebrate St. Patrick’s day we included an interview an Irish horseman, Hugh Moreshead.  There was also time for a reading from Karen Dallimore abour foaling, a song and report from our Hayfield Reporter Alex Pangman, a Pony Daze blog reading by Kim Logue and a cowboy poem from Mark Grice.  Note that the “call for volunteers” we aired had an old email address – please write to us at hoofbeats.media@gmail/com.

#144 03-03-2014 Playing the Odds

Have you ever heard the expression flying your helicopter while building it? Welcome to the evolving campus/community radio program and podcast, hoofbeats. I am your host Kim Logue, and its socan week! Today's episode is called Playing the Odds and will feature music from Lyle Lovett, Danny Michel, Bob Wiseman, Gordon Shawcross and Andrew Coombes. We'll be playing the intro from our timeslot at the Grand 92.9, and our very first training studio booking segment - the show intro from 2007, 2x by accident ha!

It will also provide an update on the state of harness racing in Ontario in 2014, 2 years after the the Ontario Liberal Government's "shameful" decision to end the Slots-at-Racetracks program in an interview edited with Brian Tropea, by Jordan, pictured left, who also did a voice over used in a past show. (Sorry there's still a quarter horse song mention blooper at 37:41, and what did you think about the RSU topic left in vs. deleted? That's how we hear that the we need the riding horse people to become fans of the sport).

We'll air a brand new recording Kim Logue's Pony Daze blog  "Know When To Hold 'Em.  You will also get to hear several of Sarah Sheard's Flying Changes blog chapters, starting with #24.

In this episode of hoofbeats we are in conversation with Judi Island, Paralympic rider, about a recent local championship award and international competition medals she has won and how.  We also feature a tune called Emily Flies by M.L. Hammond, inspired by many real kids and horses she's met in therapeutic riding programs.

You don't want to miss what Judi says halfway through the interview about Inga Hamilton, the coach that got her back on her own horse after the devasting car accident, and then also supported her for many international competitions.  It is also really moving when she reveals what it is that having horses in her life has given her...

#107 01-27-2013 Judging Reining/Western Dressage

This broadcast opens with a Lyle Lovett song, Which Way Does that Old Pony Run.  The announcement of who agreed to be our guest made the print horse-media when it ran in The Rider.
We are thrilled for the opportunity to be in discussion in episode #107 with Gary Yaghdjian, former President of the Ontario Equestrian Federation! Do you remember his article in Whoa, after visiting a slaughterhouse? That was a strong and responsible action to take at the time, and many took great comfort in his assessment, at that time.  He is a certified level 2 coach in both English and Western riding disciplines, and has a very successful longstanding horse business, The Pickering Horse Centre, which will be featured in a future episode. There was no shortage of horse talk topics, be we focused on the sport of Reining.

Welcome to episode #98 of hoofbeats, where will learn more about "Chasing Canada."  Have you seen the documentary airing on CBC recently?  Two well behaved women, wanting to make history, Kimber and her horse Katrina (Kat) rode west from Nova Scotia to the Pacific Coast of Canada.  She'll tell us more about this 6,000+kilometer, 5 month journey, we'll even go behind the scenes to learn a bit about the making of the movie.  It's such an intimate documentary.  What came first, the ride or the film?  The film follows the pair through the heart of Canada coast to coast, during which they were  intimately introduced to Canada’s vast landscapes and diverse people. #83 06-10-2012 How about those Hanoverians?

In the 83rd episode of hoofbeats! we welcome the head trainer at Parkwood Stables; a private equestrian facility dedicated to raising Hanoverian horses. First class boarding, training, coaching and sales at a newly renovated stable, nestled on a picturesque 100 acre farm North of Rockwood and an hour West of Toronto.    Inga Hamilton grew up in Germany where she apprenticed with Helga & Hans Joachim Koehler for 3 years.  She will tell us about the German apprentic program etc. while a Jeff Bird cd "Everything is Coming Clear" plays.

Inga Hamilton has shown Dressage up to Grand Prix. She has been an auction rider at the Hanoverian auction in Verden, Germany and is part of the Hanoverian inspection team performing the task of Inspector and Mare Performance test rider.  Her students have shown up to Upper Level Dressage and one student was part of the Canadian Team at the Paralympics in Athens.  Inga has a very good feel for young horses and offers training. She will back young horses, prepare mares for mare performance tests, train horses from the beginning to upper level. Under Inga’s guidance, horses will be carefully and systematically ridden, preparing them for sale, showing or for the individual owner.

Inga is past president/board member of Hanoverian Breeders Club with the goal to produce a noble horse with a cooperative temperament, elastic gaits, correct conformation, and outstanding ability in international equestrian disciplines.  We talk about starting young horses. all about the breed as well as the horses at Parkwood.

#79 05-13-2012 Odysseo for Mother's Day Show

Welcome to the Mother's day's show! The hoofbeats radio herd is back in the saddle and reining in a whole season of new episodes, starting today.

The feature of this episode is Odysseo. Have you heard of the new show from Cavalia that, marries equestrian arts, stage arts and amazing high-tech theatrical effects? The original Cavalia show has been touring for nine years, and I saw it with my mother when it appeared in Toronto 2005, when it was already drawing record crowds and rave reviews. The Toronto premiere of the all-new Odysseo is this Tuesday, May 15th, and hoofbeats will be there. We can't wait to attend!

The creators of this new ode to the horse indulged all their artistic ambitions and, in so doing, have delivered a larger-than-life spectacle, a two-hour dream that is a feast for the eyes. The fate of the harness racing has been in the news for months, because the racing industry has been facing serious declines.  Brian Tropea, General Manager of The Ontario Harness Horse Association, stopped by to bring us up to date and fill us in reactions and response to the Ontario budget announced recently, highlighting the government's plans for OLG and Ontario's horse racing and breeding industry. The entire Ontario horse racing and breeding industry and more than 60,000 jobs are in jeopardy based on the cancellation of the OLG Slots at Racetracks Program.

#76 08-07-2011 Leading Edge Leadership!

Today on hoofbeats we will hear about a unique process that integrates the instinctive feedback of horses with leading edge leadership training, team building and other programs that accelerate learning and create breakthrough behavioural change. We will look at Leadership from the perspective of the herd - very different from the pack type leadership that is typical of organizations. Horses have a lot to teach us! 

 
The guest in the studio today is Sharon Quarrington, who is both an experienced organizational development professional and a skilled “horse whisperer.   Sharon works with businesses and individuals to improve communication processes, to cultivate team-building and leadership skills, and to craft conflict resolution strategies.   Sharon has developed "Horse Sense" programs, which utilize the universal principles of horsemanship to promote learning, refine relationship skills, and deepen understanding of leadership presence.

We share some news seen RE-floating around facebook 52 thoroughbred horses that were in fact rehomed instead of going for slaughter!

Our Horse of the Week, also comes from facebook - from Akaash Maharaj's post: "After several years of patience, fortune has finally smiled on me, and I have found the addition to my herd for which I have been searching."  Rex Bellorum is a rather large name for a wee lad, but the CEO of Equine Canada's new yearling stallion is expected to more than grow into it. He will be affectionately known as "Bello", which suits him perfectly as it is both a natural contraction of his name and the word for "handsome" in the language of his sire's breed.  Bello is a Warlander, a martial union of two of the most storied Baroque breeds: Spanish Andalusian and Dutch Friesian. He has the collected muscle, playfulness, and elegant lines of his Andalusian sire, and the even temperament, stately neck, and impressive legs of his Friesian dam.  It will be about three years before Bello and his owner will be riding together, and until then, Akaash will be performing groundwork with him to cultivate his mind, physique, and spirit.  Akaash says "I hope that he and my thoroughbred Chance will become fast friends and run riot together at The Tilting Yard, our farm at Almonte, and eventually become partners in UNICEF Team Canada - The National Tent Pegging Team."

#68 06-05-2011 Horse Powered Farming with Plowshare Farm etc.

In this episode we have a farming theme. I am glad to be able to welcome a guest in studio to talk about his own hands on experience working with horses at the Plowshare Organic Farm CSA. Dave Hope will be here to tell us a bit about his Suffolk Punch friends and more.
- We've also got a HAYField Report from Alex Pangman, a brand NEW reporter for the show. We'll tell you about reports we're putting together for the future.


Our live studio guest for the radio show interned on the farm and worked with these horses. We welcome Dave Hope to his radio debut, and he shares from his background with horses.  We also air a 7:35min segment of Ken Laing, footage, from Orchard Hill Farm, who has has had draft horses almost 30 yrs. Ken has developed specialized farm equipment for horses, and is very enthusiastic about sharing with others the knowledge and skill . He does draft horse workshops that include gourmet home-cooked meals, plenty of opportunity for hands-on learning and many good laughs! There was also a one-day workshop to show you how a woodlot can be logged carefully, effectively and safely with horses. We will cover skidding with 1,2 & 3 horses on the ground and with a cart. It looked at shoeing for winter work, thinning, selection of trees for harvest, and estimating harvest volume.
